EVALUATION of you and your practice: Review and reflect on the training you are providing: how can you make it better the next time round? |

EVALUATION of the trainee: How is the GP trainee getting on? How do the staff feel about him? Consider doing an MSF or STAR rating scale (preferably MSF because it is part of the e-portfolio).

Prepare them for 'finding a job' Review their career aspirations. Discuss the various career pathways (and their pros/cons). Discuss their ideal job. Discuss how to get that ideal job. Discuss their outstanding fears. Settle any unnecessary fears. Finally - give them your phone number so they can contact you if they need a bit of advice.

| Arranging a Leaving Do | I often delegate this to the trainee in question (and combine it with the next trainee's welcoming do). And don't forget that the whole practice team should be invited to this to say their goodbyes. Of course, this could prove expensive for the practice if they decide to pay for the meal. But it needn't be that way: one might consider a £5-10 contribution per head from the practice and the rest for individuals to pick up. Besides, it also gives the added bonus of providing a 'social' for the practice team to help with the necessary periodic rebonding. | Practice Manage or GP Trainee |
| Get them a Leaving Card | And get everyone to sign it (not just the doctors). It's good practice to ask contributors to write down one thing they liked or will miss about the trainee (often a good way of feeding back on positive behaviour that the trainee will be encouraged to maintain). |

| Words of Wisdom | Often, I print the following message and enclose it with the leaving card (it's something my trainer gave me and have found it helpful ever since): |

| Consider a Leaving Gift | It doesn't have to be anything expensive. | Practice Manger or Trainer |
| Protected Specified Presentation Time | ......present them with all of this at a specified protected time (could be at the leaving do). Don't fall into the trap of doing a quick 5 minute thing over lunch which often fails to have the impact we're trying to give. | Practice Manager |
