Video Case Analysis

Video Case Analysis

It is hoped that from the 3rd month of your first attachment to a GP post, video case analysis will commence. There will be set surgery sessions where you will be asked to record your consultations. These are then reviewed at a set time by you and your trainer.

Often they are designed to give you some form of feedback by identifying areas that went well and those that could be improved on. However, at other times they will be used in a summative assessment type of way.

All trainees feel a bit reluctant at doing these at first but what you must remember is that the whole process is about helping you to develop (ie - it is not a test!). After a period of habituation, most registrars end up enjoying these sessions and find them both useful and fun!

A common first reaction to the sight of oneself on video is that you look professionally incompetent and personally unattractive – don’t worry about this. You will soon come to see yourself in a better light..... providing you bite the bullet and keep doing it.

Sitting In Surgeries/Sit & Swap Surgeries

At other times, in addition to video case analysis, your trainer may wish to sit in on some of your surgeries to get a feel for how you do things in the "here and now". I know this sounds very daunting but our previous trainees love it! It gives your trainer an opportunity to observe you directly and help fine tune some of your consulting skills and even demonstrate them by him/her consulting with the next patient and you observing.
