Idle is a village and retains considerable identity and charm although it is part of suburban Bradford. The surrounding area contains a wide variety of housing types and the patient population is similarly diverse. There are a number of new housing developments in the area which means that the list size may grow above its current 11000.
The practice was a first wave fundholding practice and worked closely with two other local practices. Together with them we have formed the "NBHGO, a total purchasing project. As a result of this we have many services on site......Physiotherapy, Chiropody and Counselling are provided within the centre. Visiting consultants provide psychiatry, urology, general surgery, orthopaedics and dermatology for our patients: Together with the Health Commission we are seeking to provide these services for other practices in the area. We are also piloting a chronic pain management clinic and a vascular ulcer clinic. The NBHGO is piloting-team midwifery and local minor injuries units from April 1996 and is developing a local low tech hospital with the Community Trust.
We work from a purpose built cost rent building which opened in April 1994. The building is of a modern design providing a very pleasant working environment with such features as its internal garden and atrium. It has been featured in many of the journals and has won architectural awards.
The practice runs a computerised appointment system so that patients can opt for continuity of care. There are two surgeries every day for emergencies so that the acutely ill can be offered an appointment the same day. We offer maternity services, minor surgery, a diabetic clinic, an asthma clinic and paediatric surveillance. Because many consultants now work on site the partners are developing new skills which will mean, eventually, that some care is moved from the secondary sector.
There is a full team of dedicated receptionists and support staff. They meet regularly to review and improve their service. An enthusiastic team of District Nurses and Health Visitors have their own accommodation within the building and are consequently available for discussion on a daily basis. They work in co-operation with the Practice Nurses to ensure that skills are appropriately utilised. There are three Practice Nurses who have a wide range of talents. They are extensively involved in diabetic care, asthma care, counselling, family planning, minor surgery and audit.
We are a friendly team who work well together across the different professional disciplines within the practice, socialising outside of work on a regular basis. Come and join us and learn how to shape the future.........not merely react to it!
