My Top Ten Gadgets

Here are some of my favourite gadgets that you might want to try out too. Damn! I'm spilling out all my secrets here! Please remember that the following information is based on my personal opinions and may not reflective of others.

Ramesh Mehay

iphone

iPHONE 3G S

Yep, it's the new iphone and I LOVE IT! Why? Because it is so intuitive. It doesn't even need a manual because it is so easy to use. It's fast, flows smoothly and is not clunky in the slightly (unlike some phones where it take a fraction of a second to get into an application but enough to make it annoying).

It can do photos, videos, photo messaging and buckets more.

One of the best features is the enormous database of applications for almost anything and they're cheap to (around 59 pence per application for most of them).

Seriously, this is a fab phone. Go for it.

sleeptracker

SLEEPTRACKER

This is one little gadget I can't do without these days. It's a watch which helps you to wake up at the right time. What do I mean by that? Have you ever had a good night's sleep and woken up the following day feeling quite groggy and unrefreshed? "Often!" I hear you say? Then this watch is for you.

Basically, you set a time window (say 20 minutes) and then you set your alarm time (say 7.30). What it does is to monitor your state from 7.10-7.30 (ie 20 minutes before the alarm time) to try and figure out the point at which you are in light sleep. Once it has found that, it will sound to wake you up. If it fails to find a light sleep period (which it usually doesn't) it will still sound the alarm at 7.30 anyway. You can even set it to vibrate too!

Having had one for 3 years, I can tell you that it really works. You can spot when a person is in their light sleep phase (of which each of us goes into roughly every 15-20 minutes) because they start to 'fidget' in their sleep. It's this movement that the watch keeps an eye out for.

What would I do if I lost it? I'd definately get another within 48 hours.

Costs around £150.

fujitsu scanner

FUJITSU fi-6130 SCANNER

This is a fast duplex scanner which means it can scan both sides of an A4 sheet through just one pass. You can even put in a batch of sheets (upto 50) to scan. I find it incredibly useful in trying to maintain a paper-free environment. I use it to scan work documents, household documents like bills and generally those documents you think might prove useful later on but you're not quite sure.

It's expensive, but you can claim some of it against tax. Try and look on ebay for a cheaper offering. Definately worth the investment because you can find files at a click of a search button. No more rummaging through papers.

Costs £500-600

lumielight

LUMIE LIGHT

Another gadget to help wake you up at the right time! In other words, wake up more naturally rather than the piercing sound of an alarm (although it can play an alarm too). Waking up more naturally means you feel more refreshed and alert.

Whilst it is not the most attractive of devices, it works by recreating the sun rising in your bedroom. As the light gets bright, so does your room and it's this light which then is meant to naturally wake you up. The light will get gradually brighter and brighter around 20 minutes before your set alarm time.

Again, having had one for over 4 years, this works. It's also meant to be a great device for SAD sufferers too. By SAD I mean Seasonal Affective Disorder. Yeah.... I know what you were thinking!

Costs around £100

digimemo

DIGIMEMO A402

I bought one of these around a year ago when I decided to learn Spanish. I wanted to write things down and then take it back to the computer and convert my notes into an electronic document which I could edit.

And that's exactly what it does. It can store (I think) around 999 pages. The conversion is good. It will embed any drawings (eg pie charts) as picture images.

The software that comes with it isn't that great but I use something called MyScript which works better and costs £40 extra. Oh, and no need to buy special paper - ordinary A4 does just fine.

Costs around £80

c-pen 600C

C-PEN 600

I've had my C-pen 600C for around 7 years and it still works. I don't even think they've upgraded it in that time because it is simply near perfect. Why fix something that isn't broke?

This is a great pen scanner which means you can scan lines from a book to collate important bits. Recognition accuracy is stonkingly good. Once you scan a line, it displays what it has converted on its screen. It can even do barcode scanning!

There are a few things that come with it like an address book facility and a dictionary which I think are pretty useless.

If you're studying or continously ripping pages from books or magazines just for the sake of a few important paragraphs, get one of these.

It links to your PC via infrared and can store upto 1500 pages of text!

Costs around £90

pedometer

OMRON PEDOMETER

Okay, so I am trying to lose a bit of weight. And walking is a great way to lose it (even without power walking). A pedometer can really help push you to go further and further. They're great motivator devices but the problem is that most are so inaccurate.

This one from OMRON is much more accurate and doesn't rely on something rocking inside it to work. I don't exactly know how it works but you can bet that it's going to be good stuff from a company who makes our sphygs!

You can wear it around your neck, put it in your pocket or even in your handbag or rucksack! (I've had mine in a suitcase when going on hols, and it still measures! No need to switch it on or off. It even has a automatic memory function for the last 10 days.

For the price, it's worth it and quite a funky looking number.

Costs around £30 (much cheaper on ebay though)

mp3swim

DOLPHIN MP3 SWIM

I love swimming but I find it a tad boring just doing lengths. I wish I could listen to some of my favourite choons whilst doing them. Well, now you can.

This MP3 player is waterproof and comes with waterproof headphones. It's capacity is 1Gb or 2Gb which is enough for a few albums. Offers 8 hours continuous operating time when fully charged

It's small enough to be discreet so you don't stand out in the crowd (unless you want to of course). It is designed to be worn on swimmer goggles but there's an optional armband too.

Costs around £80

buffalossd

BUFFALO MICROSTATION SILICON PORTABLE DISK (SSD)

I used to love the very small palm sized ArcDisks by Archos which offered around 40Gb for £99. They were great except when they failed! A lot of these portable hard drives fail because they have moving parts inside. Once the internal mechanism goes, that's it: kiss it goodbye (and your data if you haven't backed it up). I had enough when THREE of my ArcDisks failed, one after each other. So, I finally moved over to this Microstation Portable Hard Drive by Buffalo. Why?

It's again a very small palm sized device offering a whopping 64Gb. In addition, it's what they call a SSD (Solid State Drive) device - the new generation of drives which don't have moving parts inside and therefore much less prone to mechnical failure. It's a bit like one of those USB drives (which too don't have moving parts and hence why they dont fail). But this little nipper offers much bigger capacity that those USB pen drives. So, if you need large capacity, reliability and a fast device: get one of these. Otherwise, stick to a USB pen disk (which these days can offer 16Gb of storage which is more than enough for the average Joe).

The way the USB lead snuggly fits into this device is a clever and robust addition.

Costs around £120

kyocera printer

KYOCERA FS-1030D PRINTER

Yep, this is one of those printers that you probably have in your surgery. It's a laser printer. Most of you will argue that "it's only a black and white printer" but unless you're heavily into photography, most of us DO NOT actually do colour printing (our perceptions are sometime far from being real).

But the reason why I love this baby is because it can do duplex printing (printing on both sides of A4 without you having to manually do anything) and it can even do multiple pages per A4 sheet/booklet printing. All this means that a) you save paper, b) ink and c) trees. It's pretty fast too.

And the number of times I've had to do last minute printing for a group of people; this baby has saved me time and given me quality prints.

Costs £180

Replaacement cartridges cost around £60 BUT they last an extremely long time (work out much cheaper than inkjet printers).

samsung mouse

SAMSUNG NORTEK SM30P WIRELESS PRESENTER MOUSE

I bought one of these when I was last over in Spain. They're funky and fab.

The wheel turns like on an ipod and gives you great control over scrolling (has better grip than the ipod wheel). The little rectangular things sits flat on your table and connects WIRELESSLY to your laptop (through a provided dongle). It's rechargeable too but you don't have to carry a fat docking thing with you: just a nifty little cable which you plug in if the batteries start to die on you; you can still used it even when recharging.

But the other thing this little cutie does is to be used as a PowerPoint/Slide controller. Seriously good stuff if you have to do presentations.

Costs around £60 (although mine cost around £35 in Spain).

Did any of you spot that there are eleven gadgets listed not ten? I was never good at maths.
